You can tell from the fact that I'm posting.

Working from home today - what a luxury! Except for the neighbor, whose pot habit seems to occupy like 90% of his waking hours. And his window sort of vents into ours. Mmm, skunky.

OK, there was more, but I think I better actually WORK if I'm going to be home, so...

Here's what I'm thinking about, right now:

I'd like to have a party at my house. And invite only skeletons. And have a party with skeletons. Skeletons sitting in my chairs. Skeletons looking out my windows. Skeletons dancing to my music, laughing at my jokes, clacking their teeth at one another.

A good time would be had by all, I'm pretty sure.

I... don't even know where to start. It's possible I have never loved this show, or any show, as much as I love Supernatural right now.

My step-grandmother died today. She wasn't perfect, but she had her
moments. And she was a great storyteller. Here is my favorite story she
ever told me:

Once, when she lived in an old farmhouse on the hill across the valley,
she went outside to garden. It was a nice day and she put the radio on in
the living room, playing classical music, and turned up the volume so she
could hear it outside. She left the kitchen door open to let the sound
out.

Gardening done, she came back in to find a fat raccoon, which had clearly
wandered in through the open door. It was sitting on the floor by the
radio, with its face pressed up against the screen of the speaker,
listening intently to Beethoven.

scans_daily

Mar. 2nd, 2009 | 04:06 pm

As some of you probably know, scans_daily was shut down for violation of LJ's rules about IP and copyright violation. The question floating around the internets right now - especially on all the comics industry blogs I read - is not whether LJ was within their rights to shut it down (obviously they were) but whether (the law aside for now) this sort of community is a boon or a plague for the comics industry and for comics creators.

And... ok, maybe it's naive of me to be so surprised about this, but... The bloggers who are coming out in support of scans_daily and the service that communities like it provide by finding new readers for comics? ALL OF THEM ARE WOMEN. Seriously. I think I've read maybe one male blogger saying something *equivocal* about scans_daily, and the rest are all making statements to the effect of "who knows if there was a positive effect but the bottom line is they were posting material with disregard to the wishes of the owners of the IP, and that is Bad."

Who's right in this debate isn't even interesting to me anymore. I just can't get over the gender divide. It would have made more sense if this had happened back when scans_daily was more explicitly a female/slash-centric group... but in recent years it's been pretty neutral in terms of who's served by it. Which is why I'm so surprised, because my experience prior to this has been that IP issues and questions of fair use tend not to polarize people by gender. Except here we are.

Thoughts?

Fandom info for a journalist friend

Feb. 15th, 2009 | 05:25 pm

Hey gang,

I got an email from an acquaintance recently, a journalist. He writes:

"I've gotten intrigued by the universe of fanfic recently, and was thinking of poking around to see what kind of magazine articles there are to be written about it.

So, here's where i'm at:

It seems like most of what journalists have written about fanfic can be categorized either as omg-who-knew-about-this-cute-corner-of-the-internets or and-what's-more-this-slash-stuff-is-charmingly-perverse.

I think I'm more interested in the structures and conventions, values and traditions of fan fiction as an organic and self-governing community of people who have been working the remix-culture angle from way back.

But this world is vast and I am ignorant and I could use some early informal guidance."

Soooo... my first impulse is to point him at OTW and Jenkins. But are there any other sources that would be useful for someone coming at the fandom story from this angle?

ALSO: IF YOU WOULD BE WILLING TO TALK TO THIS GUY, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. I can vouch for him being sane and respectful and not dumb.

Things wot I want to spend some money on

Feb. 15th, 2009 | 03:15 pm

Help me consume, LJ friends!

1) I really, really, really want a gold scarab beetle. A little one. Not a pendant, not earrings, not a paperweight - basically, not useful in any way. Just a little gold scarab like they had back in the day.*

2) I'd kind of like to dip my toe into the wide, deep sea of quilt-making, but I'm scared! I was thinking maybe I could start with a quilt kit, as a sort of test? See how I like it? Any recommendations for quilt kits?

Batman and me

Batman: Year One was published in 1987, guys. That is OVER TWENTY YEARS AGO. And now I feel so, so, so old. Even though I didn't discover it and it didn't, like, CHANGE MY LIFE FOREVER until around 1993.

Favorite poem meme

Feb. 3rd, 2009 | 10:55 pm

'The Windhover'

I caught this morning morning's minion, king-
dom of daylight's dauphin, dapple-dawn-drawn Falcon, in his riding
Of the rolling level underneath him steady air, and striding
High there, how he rung upon the rein of a wimpling wing
In his ecstasy! then off, off forth on swing,
As a skate's heel sweeps smooth on a bow-bend: the hurl and gliding
Rebuffed the big wind. My heart in hiding
Stirred for a bird, - the achieve of, the mastery of the thing!

Brute beauty and valour and act, oh, air, pride, plume, here
Buckle! AND the fire that breaks from thee then, a billion
Times told lovelier, more dangerous, O my chevalier!

No wonder of it: sheer plod makes plough down sillion
Shine, and blue-bleak embers, ah my dear,
Fall, gall themselves, and gash gold-vermilion.
